Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to shoot some headshots for a talented actress! In the acting industry, it’s important to update your headshots every 1-2 years. We wanted to get the shots just right, so after a couple of reschedules, we managed to book a perfect sunny day!
I shoot all my headshot sessions outdoors. Contrary to popular belief, it IS possible to get great headshots outside. A lack of a studio is not a deal-breaker. Also, we set up the makeup outdoors too! On-location makeup was a breeze thanks to AKO Artistry. They set up shop in a nice shady area and got right to work!
I recommend opting for professional makeup for headshots. Regular makeup is different than photo makeup. It’s best to leave it to a professional to make you look and feel confident and radiant.
I always suggest for my clients to bring more outfits than they need. Even though we discuss ideas and plan in advance, it’s always good to have back-ups. We ended up choosing solid blocks of color over any pattern options. Patterns can be distracting and overwhelming to the eye, and we want your headshots to be about YOU.
We chose to shoot on the Princeton University Campus. I chose an area that has low foot traffic and tall buildings with solid colored walls. The environment gave us tons of variety to work with! The walls made great backdrops, providing us with shades of blues and neutrals.
The casual, outdoor look gives the shots a much more modern, up-to-date feel. They provide more range and personality to help you stand out from the crowd.
